Children’s Homes are Bringing Hope to Children Across India

Last month, Dr. KP Yohannan Metropolitan visited the children’s home supported by Gospel for Asia (GFA) in Delhi, India.

The Gospel for Asia (GFA)-supported Children’s Home offers street children shelter, food, and education.

Dr. KP Yohannan Metropolitan spent his time visiting with the children at the homes. There were laughs and hugs. Yohannan met a little girl living at the home–she was a survivor of sexual assault at the shocking age of three. After being lured into the home of an older man, she was raped and abandoned to die. Some passersby found her and notified the police. Through the government Child Welfare Committee (CWC), she was placed in a Gospel for Asia (GFA)-supported Children’s Home.

Statistics show that there are many other children like her. According to the India Times, the total number of untraceable children almost reached 63,000 in 2015. This figure continues to rise. In the past three years alone, the number of untraceable children has skyrocketed to a grim 84 percent.

Celebrated annually on November 20, Universal Children’s Day is a movement created in 1954 seeking to raise awareness for children as well as improving children’s welfare. The UN suggests that the day be dedicated to a variety of activities that will spread awareness for children worldwide.

Children’s homes provide new opportunities

Gospel for Asia (GFA)-supported children’s homes are also doing their part to help the children in their local areas. More than 82,000 children are currently enrolled in homes across India. In addition to food, shelter, and education, each child also receives access to medical care. These children’s homes offers street children another chance to be a child again, providing them with an environment to grow and pursue their dreams.

Following his visit to the children’s home in Delhi, Dr. KP Yohannan Metropolitan wrote:

Maybe one of these days, the little ones in the children’s homes and in Bridge of Hope will grow up to become doctors, engineers or teachers. Wherever their lives may lead, my prayer is that they will grow up knowing God’s love for them and become strong, upstanding citizens, who will be able to serve and lead in their communities.

As we look at the needs in the world around us, let us respond with a heart of compassion. We are to let the life of the Living God flow through us, being Him for the sake of a world in need, especially for these helpless children.
