The death toll in Assam, India has reached 69 people due to flooding.
Per FirstPost, “The death toll in the Assam floods climbed to 69 as four more deaths were reported on Tuesday, while nearly nine lakh [one hundred thousand is a lakh] people remained affected in 16 districts.”
In some of the districts affected by the flooding, the water level has gone down, while in other it is still dangerous
The Indian Express explains, “The Brahmaputra water-level has gone down the red mark in Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Biswanath, Tezpur, Guwahati and Goalpara, with official reports saying it was flowing above the danger level only in Dhubri. The Barak river in southern Assam however continued to flow above the red mark, as also several tributaries of the Brahmaputra, including the Dhansiri in Golaghat district.”
Over 1,000 villages and millions of acres of farm land underwater.
NDTV reports, “The ASDMA (Assam State Disaster Management Authority) said 1,102 villages were under water at present and nearly 41,000 hectares [a hectare is 100 acres] of crop areas were inundated. The worst affected was South Salmara, where over 2.44 lakh people were affected by the deluge, followed by Morigaon with more than 1.45 lakh sufferers.”
In the worst hit district over 1 million people have been affected by the flooding.
FirstPost states, “The worst hit district is South Salmara where 1,25,040 people are affected, while in Morigaon district nearly one lakh people are facing the flood fury, the ASDMA report said”
The North-Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) warned of a release of water, causing major panic from property and crop owners.
Per The Indian Express, “Meanwhile, authorities on Monday afternoon sounded an alert in North Lakhimpur town and adjoining villages in the wake of the North-Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) informing that it would release a huge quantity of water from its Ranganadi hydro-electric project in Arunachal Pradesh. This has caused panic, especially as several thousand people in the district had only last week suffered major loss of property, crop and animals because of a similar water release by NEEPCO.”
Gospel for Asia (GFA) is sharing Christ’s hope with the flood victims. Not only have houses been affected, but also church buildings and Bridge of Hope Centers.
Gospel for Asia (GFA) reports, “In one district of Assam, 100 believers belonging to churches led by Gospel for Asia (GFA)-supported pastors have been affected. Ten church buildings—some temporary constructions—are under water, while four Gospel for Asia (GFA)-supported Bridge of Hope centers had to close for five days because of the flooding.”
Please pray for those affected by the flooding in Assam, that they would be able to get relief and be comforted. Pray also for many to come to know Christ’s hope.
