FRUITVALE, TX – Millions of people around the world have no access to professional healthcare services. The American debate over health insurance coverage is not even on the radar for these millions. They have no doctors, nurses, or paramedics. Injuries and disease claim thousands of lives every month. The Christian Health Service Corps (CHSC) exists to address that need that we can only imagine.
“Imagine your child critically injured, but there is nowhere to turn for help: no hospital, no doctors, and no nurses.”
“Imagine they were suffering from a life-threatening condition such as malaria, or in need of life-saving surgery.”
“Imagine your only option is to watch your child die, simply because you are poor and born in a place without access to healthcare.”
Hard to imagine? It happens six million times a year to parents in developing countries where there is no one with the medical expertise available to help.
Christian Health Service Corps is an interdenominational Christian ministry that not only aims to provide access to medical services but also to set a new standard for excellence for medical missions.
Currently, Christian Health Service Corps is the only organization that specializes in sending and supporting Christian medical professionals to underserved regions on a full-time basis. Full-time medical professionals make a three-year commitment.
The corps staff serves in all levels of hospital and public health positions in 20 hospitals in 15 different countries in Africa, Asia, and South and Central America.
The Hospital Diospi Suyana in the Peruvian highlands serves the native people within a three-hour radius. The hospital has four operating rooms, a five-bed ICU, a large patient facility, and is equipped with its own radiology department.
The Lamb Hospital in Bangladesh has a staff of more than 1,000 who treat more than 60,000 patients annually. A virtual medical community, in addition to the 150-bed hospital, the main campus also features residence for more than 150 staff members and their families, a guest house for short-term visitors, a medical training center, and a school for staff and local children. The hospital has 28 clinics spread over an area of 50 miles.
CHSC helps to staff the Nkhoma Mission Hospital in Malawi, a 100-year-old, 250-bed compound that grew from what was originally a medical outpost. The staff at this hospital perform 1,700 surgeries and deliver about 3,000 babies annually. The hospital is owned by the Presbyterian Church of Central Africa.
The Sierra Madre Mountains of Mexico is home to the Tarahumara Mission Hospital. The hospital was built 20 years ago to help reduce the worst maternal and infant mortality rates in Mexico. A staff of 40 medical professionals and support personnel serves an average of 10,000 patients per year. The hospital’s Community Health Evangelism outreach travels to remote communities to share the Gospel, provide agricultural assistance, and medical clinics.
Pioneer Christian Hospital sits on a 17-acre campus in the middle of the Congo River Basis Rainforest in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This region is well-known for vector-borne and contagious diseases, including malaria, tuberculosis, typhoid fever, HIV/AIDS, leprosy, meningitis, and monkeypox. The hospital has become a strategic medical facility and center of evangelism for more than a quarter-million poverty-stricken residents and refugees.
These are just a few of the Christian Health Service Corps ministries. Each country presents unique situations, but each person there and in the other areas served by CHSC needs the healing hands of Jesus for both their body and soul.
The CHSC ministry needs Christian medical professionals and people who are willing to train as support staff in the field. Pray that the Lord will continue to provide by touching the hearts of those who have the skills to become part of the corps.
