Medical Charity CURE Changes Course of Zambian Boy’s Life

ZAMBIA — Christian medical charity CURE International continues to have a long-term impact on the children with disabilities they provide specialised treatment for.

As they become adults many give back to society thanks to the life-changing surgery they’ve received. One example is Zambian boy Phillip whose life was completely transformed when he received treatment for his legs.

When kids receive treatment at a CURE hospital it can help set them on a new trajectory for life. It can literally change their story.

In Zambia a boy named Philip started to notice that his legs were bowing.

Philip – CURE Patient 2011

“It started about grades 4 to 7. Every time I walked my knees would hurt. It was kind of scary because I didn’t know what would happen if maybe it continued. Would I get my legs amputated?

“Would I ever walk again? So I didn’t know what was going to happen in the future.”

In 2011 Philip’s mum found out about CURE’s hospital in Zambia and he received corrective surgery on both legs and stayed there for his recovery.

“After healing I was really excited. I think that is one of the happiest moments of my life. I felt this is the change I’ve been waiting for in my life.”

Phillip finished school and even pursued a Masters Degree.

“Looking at where I’ve come from I never thought I would get a Masters or would ever reach Masters level. Family-wise I’ve been the first one to reach a Masters actually. So it’s quite a great achievement for me because I sponsored myself through the Masters course.”

Phillip has a dream of raising awareness for people in need with a movement he started called the 1%.

“So 1% basically looks at a minority of people who are making a difference despite the challenges they’re going through. So I’ve been trying to engage people to make a difference and not only with the workplace. I’ve also been trying to engage doctors with regards to men’s health.”

So as Phillip’s life took a major turn for the better thanks to the help he received from CURE, it’s hoped through his 1% initiative many others will also see their lives transformed through God’s love in action.
