National Hispanic Prayer Breakfast Honors Luis Palau with Esperanza Advocacy Award

WASHINGTON DC – Internationally-known evangelist Luis Palau is currently undergoing treatment for Stage 4 lung cancer. His ongoing treatment prevented him from attending the National Hispanic Prayer Breakfast this week in Washington, D.C.

Palau was honored at the event with the 2018 Esperanza Advocacy Award.

This was the 16th annual National Hispanic Prayer Breakfast sponsored by Esperanza. Esperanza was developed as an organization to promote faith-based advocacy and to strengthen Hispanic communities across the United States.

Driven by the biblical mandate to serve “the least of these,” the group’s core values are “faith, integrity, and excellence.” Esperanza offers a variety of programs designed to empower people through education, economic development, and advocacy in a way that demonstrates God’s love in humble, compassionate, and sacrificial service. That service is motivated by a firm belief in the transformative power of Jesus Christ to provide hope and effect change.

Luminaries addressing the conference included U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, Senator Chuck Schumer, Senator Tim Scott, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Ben Carson, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, and Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi. The speakers used the platform to laud the work of Esperanza but also to address their concerns about U.S. immigration laws.

The presentation of the Advocacy Award to evangelist Palau, however, brought the assemblage of 600 Hispanic leaders to their feet, adding honor upon honor.

Presenter Dr. Elizabeth Conde-Frazier referred to Palau as “one of God’s faithful servants . . . bringing the life-saving message of the Gospel to millions of souls.” She added that “His legacy of faithfulness has made an impact on the kingdom of God that is far beyond measure.”

In lieu of his inability to appear, the NHPB shared a preview of “Palau the Movie,” a film about Palau’s life and more than six decades of ministry around the globe. Palau has authored close to 50 books and spoken in 75 countries with more than one million registered decisions for Jesus Christ.
