Emergency Food Arrives in Ethiopia

Samaritan’s Purse airlifted 1,800 cases of supplemental food supplies to help feed suffering children in Tigray region, northern Ethiopia

ETHIOPIA — Samaritan’s Purse has airlifted 1,800 cases of ready-to-use supplemental food supplies to help feed suffering children in the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia. Hundreds of thousands of families have fled their homes in the region due to violent conflict and are living wherever they can—in schools or on the side of the road. Many children among them are at risk for severe malnutrition.

The DC-8 landed successfully and relief supplies have been unloaded. The charity’s Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART), working alongside local churches and community leaders, plans to distribute food later this week to many suffering families.

Nick Bechert, Samaritan’s Purse:

The Samaritan’s Purse DC-8 cargo plane just landed in the Tigray region of Ethiopia. It’s brought 30 metric tons of nutritional supplemental food for children. There’s enough in the airplane to feed 18,000 children for 30 days.

Due to tensions in the area, there’s a dire situation where many people have been cut off from food for the last few months. Thousands of children are on the brink of acute malnutrition.

Samaritan’s Purse’s disaster response aims to save lives, reduce suffering, and share the hope of Jesus Christ. We’ll be able to distribute thousands of food baskets to families, and we’ll be able to get the supplemental nutrition items to children.

Please continue to pray for the hurting people here. They need not only these food supplies, they need peace. We’re praying that God would come in and continue to be working in huge ways to here in Tigray.
