Life-Changing Surgery Gives Mansare the Miracle of Running

Mansare grew up in Guinea in West Africa with a condition known as “bowed legs." Onboard the hospital Africa Mercy ships, his life changed.

GUINEA, WEST AFRICA — Mansare grew up in Guinea in West Africa with a condition known as “bowed legs.” It made walking, running, and playing with friends impossible. After years of watching him struggle, Mansare’s family found out about Mercy Ships. Onboard the hospital ships the Africa Mercy, his life changed.

There is nothing like the feeling of running, the simplicity, the adventure, the joy.
But for Mansare, growing up in Guinea in West Africa running hasn’t always been possible. His mother Mansare picks up the story.

SimoneMansare’s Mother:

“I noticed as he grew up that his feet were gradually distancing themselves. When I sent him to play with friends he would returning crying. He would tell me that his friends were laughing at him.

“I didn’t have the courage to go to the hospital because I don’t have confidence in our system. I saw that they do on the ship and how organized they are. I thought when they come, I will go there.

“I like what Mercy Ships is doing. They take very good care of their patients. They consult with and encourage each of their patients. Everyone comes to support the patient. I am happy with the way they treat their patients.”

Onboard the Africa Mercy, Mansare received the free life-changing surgery he needed to straighten his legs. His mother Simone was overwhelmed by the impact this had on his life:

Simone:

“There was a great transformation. As he grows his feet also grow strong. Thank you for the work you did for us.”

And the Africa Mercy crew will be carrying out many more life-changing surgeries like Mansare’s in Senegal where the hospital ship is currently docked.
