Alex’s Rwandan Journey of Forgiveness and Reconciliation

Thanks to the unconditional love he received as an orphan from a number of Christian ministries Alex was able to forgive the man who killed his uncle.

RWANDA – In 1994 during the Rwandan genocide Alex Nsengimana fled for his life and despite surviving, many of his family members were killed. But thanks to the unconditional love he received as an orphan from a number of Christian ministries Alex was able to forgive the man who killed his uncle. Today Alex’s passion is for many more people to experience true forgiveness through the love of Jesus.

More than six years after returning to Rwanda to personally forgive the man who killed his uncle during the genocide, God continues to use Alex Nsengimana’s remarkable testimony of healing and reconciliation.

After miraculously surviving the Rwandan genocide, Alex was cared for at this orphanage as a six year old year boy. And it was here that God planted a seed in his life towards healing and forgiveness when Samaritan’s Purse came to his orphanage to give all of the children gift-filled shoeboxes.

The next life-changing moment came three years later when Alex joined the African Children’s Choir.

“In my struggling… in my bitterness and blaming God for everything that happened, I missed out on those miracles. But when I got to see the miracles that He did that’s when I gave my heart to Jesus. So then I came with the choir. That happened while we were being trained in Uganda. Came to the choir traveled the United States and while we were traveling the United States that’s when God was using us to share God’s hope and to share his love with so many people.”

Following this transformation in his life years later Alex was adopted by an American family and now works for Samaritan’s Purse in North Carolina. In 2013 Alex returned to Rwanda to deliver gift-filled shoeboxes at the very orphanage where he was raised.

Alex remembers that moment during that trip when he finally met the man who killed his uncle to offer forgiveness and prayer.

“In that moment God took even my healing process to a different level and so I share that. And again that’s something that I want people to see not me doing it. That was prayer for over 12 years for God to grant me that opportunity.

Because within those 12 years God sent people to love me to show me the unconditional love of Jesus Christ daily. To show me that love so that I can be able to show that love even to the people who had caused me the most pain.”

Alex concluded by sharing how he hopes many more people will encounter true healing in their lives through Christ’s forgiveness.

“No matter what they’re going through that pain doesn’t have to define who they are, but it’s what Jesus Christ did on the cross for us. It’s the Gospel, the good news of Jesus Christ and I want someone to know that God cares no matter what they’re going through.”
