Air India Begins Observing International Women’s Day with All-Female Flight Crew

KOLKATA – Air India has launched a series of events aimed to salute to International Women’s Day. Today, 04 March 2018, the airline announced that it had operated its Kolkata-Dimpur-Kolkata flight with an all-female crew, including flight attendants, pilot, and co-pilot.

Captain Akanksha Verma and Captain Satovia Banerjee piloted the Airbus 319 on Flight AI709.

This is not the first all-female flight operated by Air India. That happened in 1985 on a route from Kolkata to Silchar.

Air India used an all-female crew on a Delhi-San Francisco-Delhi route last year, staking a claim to the longest, around-the-globe flight with an exclusively female crew.

International Women’s Day events are held every March 8th by women’s networks, corporations, charities, educational institutions, government bodies, political parties, the media and further communities.

International Women’s Day was marked for the first time in 1911. The United Nations set March 8th to mark the annual event in 1975. The UN uses the day to promote the gender equality of women and girls included in its Sustainable Development Goals for 2030:

  • By 2030, ensure that all girls and boys complete free, equitable and quality primary and secondary education leading to relevant and Goal-4 effective learning outcomes.
  • By 2030, ensure that all girls and boys have access to quality early childhood development, care and pre-primary education so that they are ready for primary education.
  • End all forms of discrimination against all women and girls everywhere.
  • Eliminate all forms of violence against all women and girls in the public and private spheres, including trafficking and sexual and other types of exploitation.
  • Eliminate all harmful practices, such as child, early, and forced marriage and female genital mutilation.
