What Is a Life Worth?

WILLS POINT, TX – Sunday, January 20, 2019, was Sanctity of Life Sunday, a date initially set aside by President Ronald Reagan to recognize the dignity of unborn children. The original date for Sanctity of Life Sunday was January 22, 1984. It coincided with the calendar date of the decision of the United States Supreme Court ruling on the case of Roe v. Wade.

Prior to this year’s commemoration, Nick Vujicic and Joni Eareckson Tada joined to share why they believe that disabilities or infirmities determine the value of life. Keep in mind that Joni has been a quadriplegic since 1966. Nick was born in 1982 with no arms or legs.

Very few would expect either to have much value as a person or much of an impact on the world through their lives. Yet, Joni has inspired millions over the past 40 years through Joni & Friends, Wheels for the World, Cause4Life, the Christian Institute on Disability, and other ministries.

Nick has never had 17 years of independence, yet the day the article is being written, he is the featured speaker at Liberty University’s convocation ceremony. He has traveled to more than 70 countries to share the message of hope and value found in the Lord Jesus Christ. He is fond of saying that

God can use a life without limbs to show the world how to live a life without limits!

The Lord has used these two individuals to demonstrate the value of a life. There are places around the world today where limbless children would be aborted or tossed in dumpsters, where quadriplegics would be neglected or ostracized by those who believe the condition was caused by a victim’s sin or the sin of someone in the victim’s family. This burden of devaluation is shared by blind, lame, deaf, and people with disabilities and disfiguring diseases. They struggle to find value in their lives when others treat them as valueless.

Joni remarked that:

[The value of life] is “not connected to whether or not we can walk, whether or not you’ve got arms, or whether or not my hands work. It’s anchored in the fact that God made us. When you talk about your worth … it’s all directly connected with the price that was paid for us … the precious blood of Christ.

Do you want to know your worth? Do you want to know your price? Think about God, and what He paid for you.

Vujicic reminded us that the Lord uses broken vessels for good and that the Lord usually places us in our circumstances before He shares His plan. Despite having no arms or legs, Vujicic is thankful that God has called him to “stand at the gates of Hell and redirect traffic.”

The Lord has blessed all those who follow Him with the ability to share His care, concern, and love for others. Nick may not be able to “be the hands and feet of Jesus” in the ways the God has blessed many of us to be able to do, but he can still demonstrate the love of Jesus and point others to the value He has placed on each and every one of our lives.
