UKRAINE — While many of Ukraine’s churches have seen large numbers of their members evacuate or go to the frontlines one pastor in the Donbas region is determined to remain and care for his flock despite major challenges in his own life.
GNA reporter Peter Wooding was there to witness the resilience of Pastor Vadim as well as his fellowship to continue to worship together and serve God just miles away from intense fighting.
As the war in Ukraine rages on after almost three years dedicated Christian ministers of the Gospel continue to serve on the frontlines including in the Donbas region in the east of the country.
And one of those people faithfully serving here in East Ukraine is Pastor Vadim. This is his church behind me and as I stand here I can hear explosions in the distance and yet this church is still meeting today.
For nearly three decades Vadim has led this congregation. And since the war began he has lost many of his members who have fled or have died on the frontlines and he has carried out many of their funerals.
He has also faced major family loss particularly when his wife died from cancer a few months ago. So why does he remain serving in this dangerous location?
Pastor Vadim:
My wife would want me to continue in this ministry. This is my life.
And while visiting Vadim’s church Jeff Thompson from the Christian charity Mercy Projects share the inspiration of his determination to remain there.
Jeff Thompson – Mercy Projects Founder and CEO:
He doesn’t want to abandon his flock or the folks that are not evacuating. So he is committed to life his faith on the frontlines because unfortunately the frontline has moved and is now very close to this town.
And despite intense fighting taking place literally just a few miles from Vadim’s church he remains determined to fulfil his wife’s wishes to continue in this vital ministry. Of course I could leave and hide but my heart is here with my people.
