In December of 2016 and January 2017, southern Thailand was hit by heavy flooding.

According to Fox News, “Flooding in southern Thailand has killed at least five people, disrupted transportation and spoiled tourists’ holidays at one of the country’s most popular resort islands.”

The rain was due to a low pressure system circulating over southern Thailand and the surrounding areas.

Al Jazeera reports, “The rain is the result of an area of low pressure circulating to the west of the country, above the Andaman Sea. Although not developed enough to form a full-blown tropical cyclone, the circulation has developed over the warm waters of the region.”

The local governments helped those who had to flee from their homes.

The Bangkok Post explains, “Municipality officials had erected tents to accommodate people who had been evacuated from their flooded communities.”
Not only were the locals affected by the flooding, but also tourists in Southern Thailand.

Fox News reports, “Flooding on the resort island of Samui in the Gulf of Thailand snarled traffic and delayed flights to and from the popular tourist destination.”
