400 Attend Women’s Seminar in Birtamod

BIRTAMOD, NEPAL — The Women’s Fellowship Departments of the Birtamod and Itahari Dioceses successfully held a two-day Combined Women’s Seminar at St. Paul Believers Eastern Church Cathedral in Birtamod, Jhapa, on November 6 and 7, 2024. A total of 400 attendees, including Sisters of the Cross, Bible women, and children from 14 different districts, participated enthusiastically in the seminar.

The first day began with H.G. Theodore Mor Origen Episcopa, Bishop of Itahari Diocese, encouraging attendees to become devoted women of prayer and evangelism, also speaking on the significance of a modest dress code. Rev. Fr. Shasidhar Chapai, Diocesan Vicar of Itahari Diocese, led a session on the symbolism of incense in worship, while Mrs. Kanchan Shrestha presented on ‘Theotokos’ (Mary, the Mother of Jesus) and the importance of the prayer rope. A Bible Verse Memorization Competition followed, with women from various districts participating eagerly; trophies were awarded to the winners in a lively celebration of faith and learning.

Day two commenced with the Holy Eucharist at 7:00 a.m. Mrs. Sabita Lama, Women’s Fellowship Leader of the Kathmandu Archdiocese, led the first two sessions, covering topics such as the role of local Women’s Fellowship, the importance of passing on faith to the next generation, and practical guidance on preparing Holy Communion wafers and wine. Rev. Fr. Chitra Kumar Rupacha led the final session, emphasizing the significance of the family prayer altar and the benefits of using liturgical prayers at home.

During the program, in collaboration with Purbanchal Cancer Hospital, Birtamod Diocese also organized a cancer awareness program focused on prevention and early detection. Dr. Birendra Kumar Yadav, an oncologist, led a presentation on the symptoms and prevention of breast and cervical cancer, highlighting the importance of regular screenings. Additionally, Dr. Suruchi Mahato and her team conducted a free pap smear screening for women, with support from Sisters of the Cross. A total of 90 women underwent the free screening.

The seminar concluded with a touching moment of gratitude as the wives of clergy were honored with shawls in recognition of their dedication and ministry. Sister Lalita Begha expressed her appreciation, saying, “After a long time, this grand event was held for us. I am so encouraged by the sessions. Each one was valuable and meaningful, and I am especially grateful for the opportunity to undergo a free Pap smear screening.”
