A Beacon of Hope for Hurting Families in Asheville

NORTH CAROLINA — Asheville, North Carolina, was no stranger to storms, but Hurricane Helene was different. When it hit, it brought with it floods that seemed to erase entire neighborhoods. Homes were reduced to ruins, and families in Asheville were left reeling from the loss.

Among those affected was Lee, a man who had spent his entire life in Asheville. He was not just any resident; he was a grandfather to nine and a great-grandfather to two, with roots that ran deep into the community’s soil. Standing on his porch, he watched as his home and his life’s possessions were carried away by the murky waters. It was a sight that would break many, but Lee found strength in his faith.

“I didn’t blame God,” he said. “The good Lord provided for us.” His words were a testament to his unwavering belief that even in the darkest times, there is light to be found.

That light came in the form of Operation Blessing, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping those in need. Supported by generous donors and compassionate volunteers, Operation Blessing sprang into action. They distributed clean water, food boxes, hygiene kits, and other essential items to the affected families. In collaboration with local churches, they ensured that hot meals were provided to those who had lost their ability to cook. In the River Arts District, where many family-owned businesses were devastated, volunteers set up temporary workspaces for artisans, helping them to keep their livelihoods afloat.

The holiday season brought further joy when Operation Blessing, with the help of its supporters, created a Christmas village for the families impacted by the hurricane. It was a day filled with snacks, games, and presents, offering a much-needed respite from the trials they had endured.

For Lee’s family, the support was nothing short of miraculous. Their property, which had been in the family for generations, was given new life. A damaged mobile home was transformed into a sturdy house, thanks to the efforts of Operation Blessing and its donors. Insulation and flooring were provided, turning what was once a wreck into a safe and comfortable home.

As Lee’s family looks back on their journey from destruction to renewal, they are filled with gratitude. “Thank you,” Lee said. “It’s just a blessing. The good Lord works through everybody.”

Operation Blessing remains committed to standing by the families of Asheville as they continue to rebuild their lives in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.
