Gunmen raided a retirement center in Yemen on March 4, killing 16, including four nuns from Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity. Six unidentified gunmen stormed the facility to commit the atrocity.
Pope Francis called the nuns “modern-day martyrs and victims of indifference.” Two nuns were Rwandans, one was Indian, and a fourth was Kenyan. A fifth nun escaped from the militants.
Other victims included guards and nurses. No residents died in the attack. An Indian priest, Father Tom Uzhunnalil, is still missing and is presumed to have been kidnapped.
“Their death was tragic but their life was not,” Dr. K.P. Yohannan of Gospel for Asia said in a prepared statement. “We thank God for their service and we are inspired by their testimony, their willingness to live – and even to die – for Christ.”
Pray for the ministry at the Yemeni retirement center and for those mourning these tragic deaths.
