Hope for Children Brings Vital Relief to 550 Flood-Hit Families in Nepal

BUDHABARE, NEPAL — In response to the devastating floods that hit the Balkhu area on July 31, 2024, the Hope for Children project under the Archdiocese of Kathmandu took swift and compassionate action to support those affected. Over the course of August 2nd and 3rd, the project organized a flood relief distribution, providing dry ration kits to 550 flood-stricken families.

The floods, triggered by torrential rains, submerged the area, sweeping away essential commodities, clothing, books, furniture, and more. Tragically, the disaster also claimed the life of 45-year-old Ram Sarup. The aftermath left the community in despair, with families struggling to find food, water, and basic necessities. Children were left without books or supplies to attend school, and the residents faced sleepless nights as they grappled with the overwhelming destruction.

Recognizing the urgent need for assistance, the Hope for Children Coordinator immediately mobilized local Community-Based Organization leaders and volunteers. Together with staff from nearby Hope for Children centers, they established two help stations, providing clean drinking water, biscuits, and tea to those in need.

In collaboration with community leaders, individuals, and partner organizations, Hope for Children quickly raised funds to support the relief efforts. After securing all necessary approvals from local officials, including the Chief District Office, the distribution of dry ration kits commenced on August 2nd at 3:00 PM and continued through August 3rd.

Despite the ongoing rain, the community leaders, volunteers, and Hope for Children staff managed the distribution with care and efficiency, using a local hall to ensure the safety and comfort of the recipients. Each family received 5 kg of rice and 1 kg of lentils—essential supplies that provided much-needed relief in this difficult time.

The gratitude of the recipients was palpable. Dhan Bahadur, one of the beneficiaries, expressed his deep appreciation, saying, “I often see *Hope for Children* helping those in need in the Balkhu Slum area. I am very happy that you came to help us too in our time of need. I thank *Hope for Children* for providing timely help.”

Another recipient, Kumar Tamang, shared his thoughts: “I would like to thank Hope for Children for providing 5 kg of rice and 1 kg of lentils. I am pleased that during our time of difficulty, Hope for Children took the initiative to fulfill our basic needs by providing these ration items.”

About Believers Eastern Church

Believers Eastern Church is an evangelical, indigenous church movement within Asia that works to follow Christ’s example of loving others and be obedient to His Great Commission. Throughout the Gospels, Jesus spent most of His time relieving people’s physical suffering. Jesus always responded with compassion, regardless of the type of suffering people endured (St Matthew 9:35-38). The Church often thinks of ministry as being either spiritual or social, but Jesus ministered to man as one whole being, made up of body, soul and spirit. This is why we are passionate about ministering to the needs of humandkind, regardless of whether those needs are spiritual or physical, and it is also why we serve humanity regardless of caste, creed, or religion.
