LIBERIA — When special needs Liberian girl Erica was tied to a tree in her community in Liberia because they thought she was cursed a Christian charity worker not only rescued her, but also restored her life through the support of a ministry center called His Safe Haven.
Her story is featured in a Christmas campaign by Christian charity CRY called Known By Name, highlighting their work to support additional needs projects not just in Liberia but also in Afghanistan.
A UK Christian charity is helping to ensure children with additional needs in the West African country of Liberia who often face stigma, rejection and abuse are provided with a loving home thanks to a centre they support called His Safe Haven.
Aime Gotte CEO of Care and Relief for the Young or CRY shares the heartbreaking story of Erica who was rescued by one of their partners after they found her tied to a tree.
Aime Gotte:
She is a bright young girl who is doing really well. But two years ago she was found by our partners tied to a tree abused. These people spat on her. The reason why is the people in that village they believe that in her case a child with additional needs it would be a way to protect them from demons. And therefore our partners came in, they rescued her and now they are looking after her in this amazing, beautiful village, a safe haven for children who have been persecuted, who were in danger of being killed because of their additional needs.
And this Christmas CRY is running a campaign called Know By Name to help many more children with additional needs like Erica, not only in Liberia but also Afghanistan.
