HONDURAS — Samaritan’s Purse medical teams are providing critical care in Jesus’ Name through their emergency field hospital in hurricane-struck San Pedro Sula, Honduras.
The charity continues to assess the needs of hurting communities across Honduras, ramping up the response to distribute additional hygiene kits and emergency shelter materials to families in need. Along with the mobile medical care, teams will distribute aid to families in communities isolated by flooding—continuing to partner with the local church to remind them that God loves them and they are not forgotten.
Mark Agness, MD, Samaritan’s Purse:
We’re here today to support the people of Honduras who are struggling from the aftermath of the hurricanes, Eta and Iota. Many of the patients who we have seen here in the first couple of days– a lot of them are truly shell-shocked from the fact that they have just been pushed out of their homes, they are living in shelters. There is a tremendous amount of uncertainty as to the future.
It’s a great opportunity for us to not only meet some of their physical needs, but also to meet a lot of their spiritual needs, to let them know that Jesus loves them beyond all measure. As we’ve had a chance to pray for them, they weep. They weep not out of necessarily sadness, but out of the idea that there is somebody that cares for them, and honestly, that we care for them as well. It is really powerful. It’s exciting.
Sarah Wilkins, RN, Samaritan’s Purse:
When we’re praying for them, we’re praying in the Name of Jesus. We’re able to remind them at a key point in their lives that there’s still hope and that there’s still people that care about them and love them.
This sweet little family came in, and the mom was radiant. She’s two, three months pregnant. And we got to show her her baby on the ultrasound for the first time– was so happy.
And then we got talking with them, and we found out that they’d been displaced by the storm and that they actually were living in the street in a makeshift shelter. But it was near their house, and they wanted to stay near their house, which was flooded. We were able to pray with them and to give them encouragement and hope that their new little baby is doing well and that they have something to look forward to in the next six or eight months.
Bethy, Patient:
Thank you because what you are doing is a labor that many people really need in this place. You are very much appreciated, and I know that God is going to help you finish this work.
Sarah Wilkins, RN, Samaritan’s Purse:
My hope for these patients is that they feel the love of Christ when they come in and that they see it, that they feel encouraged once they leave here, that they don’t leave the same way that they came in. That they leave transformed and encouraged.
