KIBERA, KENYA —A Christian charity is empowering and educating children in Africa’s largest slum in Kibera on the outskirts of Nairobi in Kenya.
Most of the residents live in extreme poverty. There are few schools, little clean water, and very little electricity, medical care or toilet facilities. With no government services, schools, clinics, water and sanitation is largely provided by charities and churches.
Based on the outskirts of Nairobi in Kenya, Kibera is the home to at least 250,000 people, and is the biggest slum in Africa, where lack of access to an education is one of the main barriers to children meeting their potential there.
Judy Akoth is CEO of CRY Partner Turning Point who provide this life-changing opportunity for these children:
So we have the main center which houses the primary school. Within the primary school we have our feeding program that offers breakfast and lunch. There’s another center that helps very young babies aged between 4 and 8. And these are children who have not been to school so we prepare them for primary school.
Akoth concluded by sharing how their love for Christ is their key motivator to seeing these young lives transformed and empowered.
We try to incorporate Christianity and the love of Jesus. We try to incorporate that in all that we do.
Turning Point also runs a community library for children who can’t afford the books they need for studying.
