NEW YORK — National Marriage Week USA announced today the upcoming launch of their 2020 campaign, which runs February 7-14th, and called for organizations across the United States to plan marriage-strengthening activities for the week leading up to Valentine’s Day.
National Marriage Week is a Campaign to Encourage Marriage, Reduce Divorce Rates, Curtail Poverty, and Benefit Children.National Marriage Week USA is a national movement promoting education about the benefits of marriage for reducing poverty and benefiting children. Throughout the week, organizations across the United States will draw attention to the need to strengthen marriage and host events to build stronger marriages.
The steep decline in married adults, coupled with a rise in cohabitation and births to unwed mothers, has resulted in a marriage crisis. Research shows that the breakdown in marriage harms children and increases poverty rates. National Marriage Week is stepping in to raise awareness about the benefits of marriage and promote strong marriages.
Recent research continues to confirm that married adults are about two times more likely to report they are “very happy” than adults who are divorced or never married. Not only does marriage increase adult happiness, but it also benefits children. In the US, marriage drops the probability of child poverty by 82%. Children raised by both their parents at home perform better in school; they are less likely to experience addiction, teen pregnancy, and trouble with the law.
“Despite popular conception, marriage is worth it,” says NMWUSA executive director Sheila Weber.
“From increasing adult happiness to providing the security children need to thrive, marriage benefits everyone. Moreover, we want every American to know that strong marriages take work. Many people don’t realize that there are effective ways to strengthen struggling marriages and restore broken relationships.”
National Marriage Week USA has released a toolkit with ideas for how to promote marriage in your community, a list of trusted resources for struggling marriages, and a national calendar of marriage-strengthening events.
“We invite all those who believe that marriage is worth it to join with us in championing marriage this February,” said Weber.
“Together, let’s shift the narrative and strengthen marriages across the country.”
