Providing New Beginnings in Mississippi

MOUND BAYOU, MISSISSIPPI — Christine Daughrity watched helplessly as the floodwaters gathered and rose around her Mound Bayou, Mississippi, home following days of heavy rain in the Delta. Then her son noticed that the water had seeped into their living room and kitchen.

Christine cut the power and called 911 in desperate need of assistance. Praise God though that, moments later, her neighbor showed up. “Our neighbor rescued us and took us to safety.”

As floodwaters began to recede days later across the region, Samaritan’s Purse deployed two Disaster Relief Units—tractor-trailers filled with relief supplies and equipment—from their ministry center in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina.

Over the weekend (June 12-13), Samaritan’s Purse volunteers began working in Bolivar County, Mississippi, and Desha County, Arkansas.

And they were able to help mud-out homes like Christine’s.

Now teams are deploying daily into communities to help homeowners clean up their homes and properties. Volunteers are removing water-logged walls and flooring, clearing out debris, and salvaging personal belongings.

Christine Daughrity, Homeowner:

My five-year-old, he came back there and told me, “Mama, it’s water coming in the house.” So I was like, “For real? I’m worried.” And he was like, “In the living room, in the kitchen, in my room, in your room– it’s everywhere.”

This is my front yard, y’all. Water just flooded. We’re stuck, we’re trapped in, we can’t even get out. My house is flooded out.

Rachael Miller, Samaritan’s Purse:

Bolivar County had a tremendous amount of rainfall in the area. Hundreds of homes have been flooded and damaged. And so the safety and security that you normally find in a home, that’s been taken away. Samaritan’s Purse is here to help provide hope in the midst of this crisis.

Christine Daughrity:

Thank you for all that you all have done, to not only just assist me and my family, but everyone that you all have helped in this community. You all are appreciated.

Rachael Miller:

There’s a lot of work to do, so we need volunteers. And we just ask that you guys continue to pray for this area, that they would know who Jesus is, that they would understand how much He loves them.
