World Vision Statement on Humanitarian Aid Funding

SEATTLE — For 75 years and through 14 U.S. presidential administrations, World Vision has been living out our calling to work in the hardest places in the world to be a child. As a Christian humanitarian organization with a presence in nearly 100 countries — including many of the world’s most challenging locations — we see firsthand the impact that wise investments in humanitarian aid can have not only for children living in these challenging places but also for our neighbors in America.

World Vision are critical humanitarian aid implementers, since 85% of people around the world are people of faith.

“From food for hungry children to clean water access to lifesaving medical care, investments from the American people have made the United States a leader in creating a healthier, more stable world,” said Edgar Sandoval Sr., president and CEO of World Vision. “Together, our legacy of service to the most vulnerable shines brightly. I pray that in this moment we can look at those in need — both in the United States and around the world — with our hearts open.”

The lifesaving help provided by the U.S. for children and families has yielded strong returns, helping to cut deaths from AIDS and childhood diseases by more than half, save millions of lives from hunger and starvation, and provide millions with access to clean water.

Through programs like the global effort to combat polio, World Vision has helped deliver vaccinations for as many as 4 million children every year. This 25-year program has not only saved children worldwide from death and disability — it has also helped keep the deadly disease from spreading to our shores and our children.

Humanitarian dollars also provide vital economic support to U.S. farmers in the form of business revenue as they sell crops (like sorghum, beans, peas, corn, and oil) that then support families facing famine or severe malnutrition in places where food supplies cannot be purchased or sourced locally. These aid programs sustain a vast network of as many as 60,000 American jobs across the entire supply chain, from farmers to truckers to port workers and beyond. In the past year alone, humanitarian funding in partnership with U.S. small businesses reached $1 billion, helping to strengthen American innovation and leadership.

Trusted faith-based organizations like World Vision are critical humanitarian aid implementers, since 85% of people around the world are people of faith. World Vision serves as Jesus’ hands and feet wherever we work, including places where few Christian organizations are invited — partnering with local leaders in the shared goal of fuller lives for the children in their communities.

World Vision carries out these lifesaving efforts with investments from a multitude of partners, including individual donors, churches, corporations, and the U.S. government. We thank God for all of our faithful donors, and we treat the donations committed to us as a sacred trust. We recognize the critical importance of ensuring rigorous stewardship in humanitarian assistance.

We support a future of wise U.S. humanitarian aid that continues to be locally led and evidence-based, and which delivers maximum impact. Because of this, we are very concerned about the impact that further delays in restarting lifesaving aid programs —including those that deliver urgently needed food, water, and medicine — will have on the most vulnerable families around the world.

“As we have for 75 years, we remain committed to following Jesus by caring for and working alongside families in need, both here at home and around the world,” said Sandoval. “This is our calling, and our prayer.”
