Before the month of Ramadan started (ending on June 24), terrorists attacked a Coptic Christian bus which was headed to a monastery so they could pray.
Daily Express states, “A group of more than 50 Coptic Christians travelling towards the monastery of St Samuel near Minya, about 150 miles from Cairo, was targeted by ‘armed terrorists’, according to state media.”
There were 10 terrorists who came out of 3 SUVS carrying snipers.
Per Fox News, “As many as 10 attackers in 3 SUVs stormed the bus dressed in military uniforms and wearing masks, before demanding that the passengers recite the Muslim profession of faith, according to witnesses. Then, the gunmen opened fire. Some 22 people were wounded.”
ISIS called for new attacks on Christians and other religious minorities during the month of Ramadan.
The Independent reports, “The terrorist group has targeted Christians and other religious minorities around the world and has called for fresh attacks to mark the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.”
After the attacks, government leaders met to deliberate how best to protect Coptic Christians, Egypt’s largest Christian Church.
Daily Express states, “President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has called a meeting of security officials in the wake of the latest attack on the Coptic Orthodox Church – Egypt’s largest Christian church and the Middle East’s biggest Christian community.”
Coptic Christians are 10 percent of Egypt’s population.
Per Fox News, “Egypt’s Copts, the Middle East’s largest Christian community, repeatedly have cried out for help from discrimination, as well as outright attacks, at the hands of the country’s majority Muslim population. Coptic Christians account for about 10 percent of Egypt’s 93 million people.”
The Egyptian military made airstrikes on militant training facilities in Libya.
The Independent reports, “In response to the attacks, the Egyptian military launched airstrikes against what it said were militant training facilities in Libya.”
This is only the latest of continuing attacks on Christian Copts. In April, two Coptic Churches were attacked on Palm Sunday.
Daily Express explains, “It is the latest fatal attack on Copts in Egypt in the past few months, after more than 45 people were killed in a double suicide bombing in April, when terrorists attacked churches in Tanta and Alexandria on Palm Sunday. “
Youth With a Mission (YWAM) works in Egypt to provide the hope of Christ and to train up Egyptian Christians to share it with their own people.
YWAM states, “YWAM has been active in Egypt for over 30 years with many hundreds of Egyptians attending DTSs or further training with YWAM in Egypt and beyond.”
Pray for comfort for those who have been affected by the bus shooting. Also, pray for YWAM, that they would be able to share Christ’s hope with the people of Egypt.
