2021 CRC Worldview Survey Release #5: Unbiblical Ideas Embraced by Americans

GLENDALE, AZ – The Cultural Research Center (CRC) at Arizona Christian University has released the fifth in its series of reports examining Americans relative to our current Biblical worldviews. The report begins with what may be the boldest opening line of any of the releases so far.

The American public flaunts its free will in many ways, not the least of which is by embracing a number of seductive—but decidedly unbiblical beliefs—as part of their worldview.

Unbiblical Ideas Embraced by AmericansThis latest edition draws our attention to the “Top 10 Most Seductive Unbiblical Ideas Embraced by Americans.” It explores the percentage of Americans with either Biblical or non-biblical worldviews who accept 10 unbiblical ideas as truth.

Ideally, no one who professes a Biblical worldview should accept or ascribe to any concept, philosophy, or life practice that is contrary to the truths taught in the Bible. Unfortunately, however, the fact that such people exist is evidence of the continuing erosion of Biblical truths once taught in our families, churches, and schools.

Perhaps the most disturbing statistics included in the fifth release are that, among Americans identified as having a Biblical worldview:

  • 52% believe that people are basically good
  • 42% believe that having some kind of faith matters more than in whom or in what their faith rests
  • 33% believe in karma

Across the board, 67% of all Americans no longer believe in unconditional moral absolutes. Think about it this way: If we believe in the unconditional moral absolutes of the Bible, neither of our neighbors to the left or to the right do. In context, the difference is much starker and darker.

A previous release established that no more than 6% of all Americans have a Biblical worldview. So, the reality is that in a neighborhood of 500 adults, only 30 have a Biblical worldview. Fewer than five (14%) of those do not believe that absolute moral truths exist. Of the remaining 470 who do not have a Biblical worldview, 324 (69%) do not believe there are any absolute, binding moral truths.

Dr. George Barna, Director of the Cultural Research Center, suggests that the rejection of moral absolutes is a willful rejection of God’s authority in favor of imposing our own control over all of our beliefs and choices.

“Biblical Christianity is about giving God control, making choices that reflect His prescribed ways of life. That’s hard for Americans to embrace. A faith that esteems brokenness, submission, surrender, sacrifice, and simplicity is in some ways antithetical to the American ideal. But that is the ultimate choice that every one of us has to make.”

We are witnessing Americans – and American Christians – exchanging the truth for a lie. Romans chapter one describes what happens to a culture that chooses to do so. We all need to examine our worldview to ensure that it is Biblical. Then we can follow the Apostle Paul’s instruction to “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15)
