West Virginia floods claim lives, homes and businesses

Torrential rains fell in West Virginia beginning June 23, claiming 23 lives, damaging more than 1,200 homes and causing power outages for 30,000 homes and businesses. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) called the flooding a “historic” tragedy.

The flash flooding washed out roadways and building structures. Many homes were swept off their foundations. Severed gas lines ignited fires, which destroyed more homes.

Southern Baptist Disaster Relief began their mass feeding and cleanup and recovery operations in eight West Virginia counties that incurred the most damage. Samaritan’s Purse also began cleanup and recovery operations and other services, including chaplaincy ministries via the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team.

“This is a tough scene. This is a difficult task,” said Tim Haas, manager of Samaritan’s Purse U.S. Disaster Relief.

Pray for West Virginians as they continue their recovery from the summer’s flash floods.
