HONDURAS — Samaritan’s Purse mobile medical teams are using helicopters to reach villages that have been cut off from help due to flooding from back-to-back hurricanes.
Seth Harris, Samaritan’s Purse:
So with all the flooding, the roads are out. The bridges are out. There’s water everywhere. So people are just stuck, and there’s no other way to get to them. Having the helicopter and being able to work with the mobile medical teams, since they can’t come to us, it’s really amazing that we’re able to get to them.
Kelly Sikes, RN, Samaritan’s Purse:
We are here in Honduras after the two hurricanes hit this region. And we’ve deployed a Disaster Assistance Response Team, and we’re using the helicopter to be able to fly to areas of villages that are totally cut off from help.
They’re trapped by the flooding, and they’re not able to get down to where the help is. So we’ve deployed doctors and nurses to see large quantities of people who have been displaced from their homes. And we see a lot of people having to live in shelter locations. And a lot of their story is they lost everything, and they don’t know what’s going to happen. They don’t know how they’ll replace it.
We lost everything, the house, everything. The kids, all of us, are scared. We sleep on the floor on a mattress just with sheets and no roof. They have treated us very well.
Not only are we bringing them the medication and the treatments that they need, but they’ve been through a very traumatic situation, two storms hitting in a short period of time. But when you see the looks on their face when the helicopter lands on a soccer field in a mudded out flooded village, that’s hope coming on that helicopter. And I love to be a part of that and to be the hands that bring Jesus to a village that’s hurting. Please continue praying for the people of Honduras and our Disaster Assistance Response Team doing the work of Jesus here in this location.
