Samaritan’s Purse Response Continues in Mexico After Hurricane Otis

ACAPULCO, MEXICO — Samaritan’s Purse teams are continuing to assist hurting homeowners in communities devastated by the deadly Category 5 storm, Hurricane Otis. They are working alongside Los Legendarios, a Hispanic disaster relief group that has also served with them in recent Florida responses.

Andrew MetcalfeSamaritan’s Purse:

People are traumatized. They’re wondering, is there hope? Are they forgotten? Is God punishing them? We heard stories of families whose roofs blew off, whose walls fell down on them, who held each other all night as a family as high winds continued to pound their homes and destroy their community. I think we can grieve, yes. Homeowners can grieve in times of pain. But at some point, we also need to recognize that there is hope. Sometimes we need help getting back up.

Samaritan’s Purse is here responding to devastation after Hurricane Otis. With the help of the Los Legendarios and Samaritan’s Purse U.S. Disaster Relief, we have the privilege to be those hands and feet of Jesus Christ, to show that there is a way past the grief and that there is hope for a future.

This family, after the storm, grandma was telling us that the children were afraid every time the wind blew because the roof would rattle and they’d wonder, is the roof going to come off again? If we can come in and offer just a little hope by putting a tarp on a roof or picking up the yard so it looks a little more like it did before the storm, that can help calm the grief and trauma that people are experiencing.

We hope by the end of today that our homeowners will know that they are loved and cherished by God, that they are loved and cherished by God’s people and fellow believers, and that they feel a sense of hope is being restored in their lives after they’ve suffered from the trauma of Hurricane Otis.
