Unity State, in South Sudan, which has a population of 100,000, has been declared by the United Nations to be famine proportions. There has not been a famine in South Sudan for six years.
Per the Guardian, “A further 1 million people were classified as being on the brink of famine, according to the World Food Programme (WFP) and other UN bodies. Unimpeded humanitarian access was urgently needed to reverse ‘an escalating catastrophe,’ they added.”
Humanitarian Aid has not been able to get into these due to both the wars and a blockage of goods coming into South Sudan.
News 24 reports, “He [Eugene Owusu] said conflict and insecurity for humanitarian workers, who had suffered attacks while carrying out their work, and the looting of ‘humanitarian assets’ had exacerbated the crisis.”
Another problem with aid workers, is that there are multiple droughts and famines throughout the world.
The BBC explains, “The WFP’s chief economist, Arif Husain, said a combination of wars and drought meant that for the first time in recent years, aid workers were now talking about four simultaneous famines in separate parts of the world.”
